Spirulina, this blue-green microalgae is one of the oldest forms of life on the planet.

You can start with 1g per day for a week and progressively increase the dose in the following weeks. There are no known interactions with plants or supplement and medication.

Where is Spirulina coming from?

In Latin (Arthrospira platensis) is a green-blue seaweed of freshwater from the family of Cyanophyceae. Spirulina is not a marine organism. It develops in its natural state in the lakes of the tropical belt.

Mexico, the Andes, Chad, Kenya, Morocco, India, and China are the predilection area where she grows. Invisible to the naked eye, Spirulina is microscopic and has the shape of a spiral.

There are two main species of Spirulina.

These algae are a natural treasure. Many countries put in place crop farms of Spirulina. Among them are China, India, Peru, Togo, and Vietnam.

Spirulina Dietary Supplement

You first must be sure that you buy your Spirulina from a trusted and proven source. It is not for pregnant and nursing women. This dietary supplement is not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration.

Reputable commercial brands note on their label that they have a certification of the quality of the ingredients in their product from an independent laboratory.

These labels have a control number that you can verify with the laboratory that conducted the test. Buying one of these brands make sure you are buying a safe product.

How do you eat Spirulina?

Spirulina comes mostly in tablets and powder form. Pour a tablespoon of spirulina powder in a glass of water or juice stir and drink it straight. You can also add some to a smoothie.

Be aware that a small quantity of Spirulina powder can change the color of your drinks. Keep a glass of water nearby in case your teeth turn blue-green.

Avoid taking a spoonful of powder by itself you will have then the feeling of swallowing flour. It is also not recommend taking it before going to bed.

Store an open bottle of tablets or powder in the refrigerator and consume within a few months.

Is Spirulina Good for Your Dog?

Dogs with allergic skin conditions, cancer, and heart disease may be favored if they take Spirulina. Do not give Spirulina to a dog with liver disease as per Lorelei Wakefield, VMD.

Provided that you feed your dog with what you think is a good quality Spirulina I would double check with my veterinarian to make sure I am doing the right thing.

Spirulina is also good for your cat your horse and many other animals as long as you take the same precautions you took with your dog, verify if it is recommended for your animal.

Spirulina Receipts!

Spirulina is a superfood not always easy to use because of its rather pronounced taste. That is why most of the time it is consumed in tablets.

However, Spirulina is purer in powder because she went through fewer transformations and is easier to use in the kitchen when in powder or flakes.

Greek Salad!


Ingredients for 1 person:

  • 2 to 3 tomatoes.
  • An ounce of Feta cheese.
  • A handful of black olives.Greek salad
  • A pinch of Provence herbs.
  • A teaspoon of Spirulina powder.
  • 2 teaspoons of olive oil.

Preparation of the recipe.


  • Cut fresh tomatoes into slices and the Feta in cubes.
  • Add a handful of black olives and 1 or 2 teaspoons of Spirulina.
  • Add salt, pepper, and olive oil. Enjoy your salad!




Spirulina Smoothie

One of the simplest and most greedy ways to consume Spirulina is to add it to your smoothie.

Spirulina goes well with sweet fruits like banana, pineapple or mango. It will reduce its iodized taste.

You can add your Spirulina in your sauces, in your soup, your salad, in your pastes, in your homemade juices.

Make hummus with Spirulina and ice cream, put it in your Risotto.


Guacamole with Spirulina

Ingredients for 2 persons.Guacamole

  • 2 Avocados.                               
  • 1 tomato cut in pieces.         
  • 1 Half of the onion cut into cubes.                                           
  • 1 Half lemon.                             
  • 1 teaspoon of Spirulina.   

Coriander (or parsley) Fresh Peppers or powder.

Preparation of the recipe.

  • Prepare the avocados to keep only the flesh.
  • Using a fork crush the avocados.
  • In a bowl mix the avocados with the onion and crush it all.
  • Add the tomato.
  • Add salt and the lemon, coriander or chopped parsley and the pepper.
  • Incorporate to this preparation the desired dose of Spirulina and mix.


Detox JuiceDetox Juice

Ingredients for 2 persons.

  • 2 Organic apples.
  • 1 Cucumber.
  • 1 Green lemon.
  • A full teaspoon of Spirulina.


Preparation of the recipe.

  • Pass the apples and cucumber to the juicer.
  • Dilute the Spirulina in the lemon juice and add to the mix.
  • Enjoy your detox drink.


Spirulina SoupSpirulina Soup

Ingredients for 4 persons.

  • 1 cup of broccoli cut into small pieces.
  • 1 cup of spinach.
  • 3/4 cup cashew nuts or 3/4 cup of hemp seeds.
  • 2 teaspoons of whole brown rice.
  • 2 teaspoons of Spirulina.
  • 1 handful of sea salt.
  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil or coconut oil.
  • 1/2 garlic clove. (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice. (optional)
  • Parsley. (optional for decoration)


Preparation of the recipe.

  • Put all the ingredients except parsley in the mixer until everything becomes homogeneous.
  • Heat the soup and decorate with parsley. (optional)

Make Spirulina Cures!

A dose of 3 to 4 grams of Spirulina per day for 3 weeks is enough to bring you all the benefits of the product. You must take a pause between two cures otherwise your organism might get accustomed to the product.

  3. Me and my wife are losing weight for last couple weeks. We have good results, and we are motivated to live more healthy in general. We never tried spirulina, as you can’t buy it in a local groceries. At least I never noticed.

    One way or another there is a great chance we try it out. You said you have to do a break between intake courses. Can you give your advice, how long should one course of spirulina intake should last, and how long a pause between intake courses should be?

    Liked guacamole receipt by the way. Spirulina should disappear totally there.

    1. Thank you for your comments, I read you should try it for 3 weeks and stop for a week to analyze if you react to Spirulina. If you don’t see any bad effects and especially if you feel good with the effects you are feeling keep taking it and stopping it regularly.
